How to grow a tropical syngonium, 35 photos
Want more greenery in the house, not enough summer colors gloomy winter? The evergreen syngonium will become a real decoration of the room.
The plant belongs to the vines, so caring for it is simple.
Can syngonium be kept at home?
Tropical liana during its cultivation managed to become the main character of many myths. There are both bad and good signs and superstitions:
- Liana is called a room weather forecaster for the formation of droplets on leaves with increasing humidity, which is associated with the approach of rain.
- On the verge of prejudice, the superstition that the creeper drives men out of the house with its energy.
- Most attention is paid to the energy of the syngonium for the teaching of feng shui. According to ancient Chinese observations, any angles, including the tips of the heart-shaped leaf plates of a creeper, fill the room with "poisonous breath". But, according to the same teaching, any negative can be neutralized with positive talismans and amulets by placing them next to the plant.
Any care at home for syngonium should be carried out with gloves, since all vines are poisonous. Once on the skin, the juice of the plant provokes an allergic reaction (irritation, redness, swelling and itching). Of course, the flower is not eaten, but if accidentally swallowed by a child or animal, symptoms of poisoning are observed: nausea, vomiting, diarrhea, dizziness.
Advice! If the house has a small child, the plant can be grown in hanging flower pots at a height inaccessible to it. Be sure to explain that any indoor flowers should not be touched.
Growing syngonium for a long time, you can notice a number of changes in the psychological state and behavior of others.
Effect on the atmosphere in the house
The fast-growing syngonium partially transfers its energy of life to the surrounding space. Purposeful flower growers will be able to feel confident in their abilities, to gain firmness of character and decisions made.
It is believed that the owner of the flower also begins to grow rapidly in a professional and personal direction, while retaining strength in household chores and family.
Impact on the emotional state
From observing the development of a creeper, a person's emotional state changes. The plant shares its positive energy, and removes from the household painful experiences, emotional wounds.
Each new leaf on the plant contributes to the discovery of new spiritual qualities and talents of the owner. He becomes interested in various activities, unexpected hobbies appear. It becomes easier to perceive new information, to acquire complex knowledge.
Shy people begin to feel in their place in any company, overcome their complexes. It’s easier for them to live in the present and let go of past adversities.
Anxiety for the future gradually disappears, thoughts are sent in a positive direction, changes are perceived more easily.
All these changes contribute to the normalization of sleep: nightmares appear less often, a person falls asleep faster. It is believed that in a house with a syngonium, diseases pass faster or do not appear at all. If you strongly believe in its miraculous capabilities, then you can get rid of serious ailments. This is especially true for problems with the digestive tract, since the creeping vine is associated with the same long intestines.
Important! Of course, only plants are few, and the disease is first treated according to the scheme prescribed by the doctor.
Homeland and plant description
The birthplace of the plant is the south-central part of the American continent. In tropical forests, a liana clings to tree trunks, using them solely for support. Liana grows in the jungle to 20 m, and in the apartment - about 2 m.
The thickness and color of the shoots depends on the age of the plant. Young branches of light green hue begin their growth with a few millimeters. They actively participate in photosynthesis, and then turn brown, reaching a thickness of 5 cm.
Liana does not branch and grows in one long shoot. In case of accidental damage, a side shoot is formed, continuing the growth of the vine. The syngonium is very flexible, so it is easy to twist it compactly around a commensurate support.
The main thing for which the liana is valued is the leaves. Their shape is most often heart-shaped, but there are also three-lobed, arrow-shaped or lance-like spears. Even on one flower, the leaf plates can externally differ at different ages. Coloring is most valued motley - in several shades of green, with white, pink, yellow or red specks and stripes.
Important! Leaf coloring is highly dependent on the intensity of lighting.
Flowering at home is impossible to observe. In the greenhouses, an inflorescence may appear - an ear with a bract painted in pastel colors.
Species and varieties
All species (with photos and names described below) are varieties of several natural varieties of syngonium. The main differences between them are the color and shape of the leaves.
An interesting variety of syngonium with pink leaves. Especially young "hearts" have a rich color, complemented by raspberry spots. After a few years, the pigment loses its brightness - the color turns into almost white, remaining only in specks.
It is interesting that such a change also occurs with too bright lighting, even in young leaves.
The main color of the plant is green, and pink-brown spots are scattered randomly on the surface of the leaves.
The length of glossy leaves can reach 15–20 cm in length and width. The leaf is attached to the stem with the same long stalk. They are colored green, and the veins are highlighted in white.
Over time, the plates change: the edges of the leaves are dissected into 3-5 parts, and the branches become lignified.
Attention! The ear-shaped syngonium grows very intensively and can add up to 1 meter in a year.
The peculiarity of the variety is the delicate pink color of the leaves. A border with a green tint is observed along the edge, the intensity of which varies depending on the conditions of detention. The leaf looks embossed due to depressions along the veins. As it grows, the color undergoes a change - it becomes paler, and the main pigment remains in the veins.
A dwarf variety of syngonium with green heart-shaped leaves. The veins are slightly highlighted in a light pink tint.
Unlike the pink varieties of syngonium, the broccant variety can even be called brutal. Its dense leaves with a shiny surface combine dark green and brown shades. The plant is easily amenable to crown formation even in the most intricate figure.
This liana has become the progenitor of many hybrid varieties, as it has classic species features. Its leaves are heart-shaped (arrow-shaped) painted in plain green. The length of petioles reaches 30 cm, and in a year the liana grows by almost half a meter. In an adult plant, the leaf shape changes to dissected.
Pixie (Syngonium pixie)
A plant with such small sizes can hardly be called a vine. Leaves about 5 cm have the main green tone, and in the center - merging white specks.
Almost snow-white variety of syngonium has small green spots. It loses its color due to a lack of nitrogen in the soil, but with an excess of it, the leaves die off quickly.
Still not too popular look with frosted green leaves and yellow specks.
For those who are not ready to allocate a lot of space to the liana, the Red Spot syngonium is suitable. Its height does not exceed half a meter. Leaves are painted in several tones of pink, green and brown.
The Wendland Syngonium has appeared in Costa Rica and is a liana that clings well to a support. Green leaves with a white core are spear-shaped. At the base of the petiole 2 small leaflets are formed, and the main oval-shaped leaf plate is directed forward.
The capricious variety of syngonium is considered a variety of pink creeper. Outwardly, they are very similar - pink leaves, which over the years will turn green with purple streaks. A flower is very problematic to maintain and propagate because of its pickiness to microclimate conditions.
Syngonium Regina red differs from neon in a reddish tint and a leaf base dissected into 3 segments.
Butterfly (White Butterfly)
Butterfly variety has an interesting change in leaf color. Initially dark green, they gradually turn white due to the distribution of pigment from the veins to the periphery. The hem about 1 cm along the edge remains green for a long time after clarification of the entire sheet.
When they talk about the unpretentiousness of syngonium, most often they mean exactly this variety. However, a vine can add up to 1.5 meters per year.
A rare variety not found on the shelves of ordinary flower shops. The originality of the colors is in the combination of light green paint with pink and yellow splashes over the entire surface. In the center and along the veins, the color brightens and becomes almost white. The shape of the leaf over the years from arrow-shaped turns into a stellate due to the division into shares.
Syngonium Christmas is a liana with green foliage and yellow-pink veins.
Among the varieties of this variety there are plants in the form of shrubs. The color of its leaves has varying degrees of severity of green and white.
The matte surface of a white-green plain sheet for an interesting coloration is compared with a silver pearl, which formed the basis for the name of the species.
This variety has dark brown leaves, greenish at the ends, and petioles with a red tint.
The green color of the leaf plates is diluted with white strokes and stains.
One of the many pink varieties of syngonium with specks of the corresponding color, collected in the center of the leaf plate.
A whitish green variety of creepers. Paints are scattered in the form of large spots with uneven edges.
Syngonium macrophyllum with rounded leaves is distinguished by large sizes of dull green leaves.
Narrowed syngonium - a liana with leaves strongly dissected into 10 segments.
Liana does not require much time to care. The green corner is easy to arrange even in the back of the room thanks to the shade tolerance of many varieties of syngonium.
If the apartment has a window facing the western or eastern part of the world, then the vine can be safely placed on its windowsill. Liana looks spectacular in a cache-pot, on high supports in a pot or around the window.
In the depths of the room, it is recommended to grow only monophonic species of syngonium, which do not change the shade from a lack of light. From fast-growing varieties, you can make a whole corner of the jungle by stretching the rope along the upper corners of the furniture: a liana will begin to wrap around them.
Important! The flower content near the battery or heater is excluded.
Soil and pot selection
When deciding which pot is needed for the syngonium, it is recommended to opt for a pot of medium height and good width. Soil should be prepared highly nutritious and neutral (pH 6–7). To do this, it is recommended to add ½ part of sand and part of peat to ordinary turf and leafy soil.
Accustomed to grow on trees, lianas need pieces of bark in the substrate. Charcoal is added to absorb harmful toxins.
Liana adapts to a wide range of light intensities. It all depends on the species: variegated prefer the abundance of scattered light, and monophonic ones grow at a fast pace and in partial shade. Pink varieties lose color faster in bright lightbut they will not grow in the shade. Do not allow a long arrangement of the flower under the scorching sun.
Tropical liana is used to high humidity. Soil is always maintained in a slightly damp state. In winter, drying of the topsoil by a couple of centimeters is allowed.Water is used softened, room temperature.
In the warm season, Syngonium loves regular spraying, at least - along with the next watering. In winter, weekly wiping the leaves with a damp sponge is enough to remove dust and moderate moisture.
In the heating season and summer heat, it is desirable to increase humidity in addition to spraying. It is convenient for this to put the plant on a wide flat container filled with pebbles or expanded clay. Water is poured into it several times a week as it evaporates.
Fertilizers and fertilizers
Throughout spring and until the end of autumn, it is recommended to feed the syngonium with fertilizers for evergreens every month. Note: the calcium content in the supplement should be minimal.
Cropping and shaping
There are several ways to form a crown of a liana:
- Let curl one long branch in the form of an ampel plant.
- Create a semblance of a bush by planting several shoots in one pot and pinching the apical buds above 5 leaves.
- Spin the vine around the stand installed in the flowerpot.
Liana in the natural environment is poorly branched. Trimming it for this purpose is often not recommended: it is better to set the growth direction to the main shoots.
Mistakes in leaving
Inadequate lighting will result in loss of mottled color and growth of solid leaves. You should rearrange the pot to the light.
Pale leaves may indicate excessive watering or lack of drainage at the bottom.Spots on leaves of unnatural color appear with poor water quality. for watering and spraying.
The flower grower may not have enough time for frequent spraying, then the tips of the leaves dry.
At air temperatures below 12 ... 15 ° C, the leaves of the liana become brown along the edges, the growth of syngonium slows down. The same situation occurs when pouring cold water.
Slow growth is observed in partial shade or in the absence of top dressing. AND from an overabundance of mineral fertilizers, the leaves and stem turn yellow.
The main method of propagating vines is vegetative.
15 cm are cut from the top of the stem with 3 spaces between leaves and aerial roots. The stalk is left in water at room temperature and covered with a film. The glass stands at a temperature of 25 ° C. The film can be removed from the rooted stalk.
A piece of stem
Reproduction with a piece of stem does not differ from the previous method. The method is suitable for an adult, already overgrown creeper. Syngonium trunk can be rooted without the participation of a growerif it is dug up with earth with several aerial roots in the same pot. After a couple of weeks, their own roots are formed, and the sprout can be cut off from the mother plant.
Care for the rooted cuttings in a separate pot is necessary in the same way as for an adult syngonium.
Any disease leads to a rapid loss of decorative flower.
Aphid settles on the lower surface of the leaves and on the tops of the shoots. From a small area it can be removed with cotton wool and soap. If the whole plant is affected, then it is sprayed with an insecticide.
From life shields the leaves dry, the growth of the liana completely stops. The danger lies in the defeat of the trunk: if its base dries, the entire plant will die.
If the syngonium is already filled with pests, it is wiped with a soap solution, and then washed in the shower. The remaining scale insects are destroyed by spraying with an insect repellent.
Dry air - the main provocateur of infection thrips. Light spots form on the leaves, then they turn brown, a surface luster appears. To combat them, the insecticides Intavir and Fitoverm are suitable.
A spider mite also appears with insufficient spraying. A thin web becomes visible in the sinuses, and the leaves dry and fall off. The problem is solved by treating with an insecticide and increasing humidity.
Syngonium (photo) is actively used in landscape design, especially if necessary to decorate balconies or verandas with ampelous cultures.
